Track Update (19th Sept 2011)

The following is an open letter that Keilor LAC President regarding the delay to our new track which has resulted in our weekly competitions being held at an alternative location until January 2012. .

Dear Members,

As you would be aware the upgrade of our Athletics track commenced in December last year with the project scheduled to be completed for the commencement of our 2011/2012 season.

Whilst the project was well planned the inordinate amount of rain received within the site and throughout the length of the project has resulted in delays in almost every stage of construction.

The asphalt was finally poured and after the mandated curing period, the laying of the synthetic surface was scheduled to commence on Monday September 12, with the project scheduled to be completed by Friday October 21, 2011.

At a meeting held between the contractors, council and ourselves last week, an inspection of the track was completed and concerns were raised regarding the state of the surface in an isolated part of the track. Upon closer inspection it was decided to delay the start of the synthetic laying until further opinion was obtained from field engineers.  Regrettably, this process will likely result in an additional delay of the project for a period expected to be between 8-10 weeks.

Whilst this is a disappointing development I am certain that you would agree that the most prudent course of action, given the significant investment in our new track, is to ensure that the track is given the best possible opportunity to be constructed as it was always intended.

As a consequence we have no alternative but to relocate competition until the track is completed. Fortunately, we have been able to secure access to the Moonee Valley Athletics Track thanks largely to the support of the Moonee Valley City Council and the tenant athletic clubs at the facility.

Our first two weeks (“come and try”) will be conducted as Friday twilight events commencing at 6.00pm. Thereafter, we will be looking to host competition on either Friday twilight or Saturday afternoons.  We expect to finalise those dates within the next fortnight.  Updated postings will be placed on our website http://www.keilorlac.org.au

With respect to the duty roster, we are assuming that parents that have nominated their availability for the first 6 competition weeks are available regardless of the day of competition, unless they inform our Duty Roster Manager (Lynelle Petersen) otherwise.

Though we are equally as frustrated in the delay, I give you an assurance that the entire Executive has worked tirelessly to minimise the inconvenience to our members and should you have any concerns regarding this advice please feel free to contact me personally on

0415 688 674.

Regards

Sam Barbuto

President

*No points - KLAC operates a performance based points system that allocates points to athletes for each of their performances in any track or field event in which they compete. Points are not allocated for winning or high placings. The points accumulated over the season count towards some end of season awards. Other end of season awards are based on participation and athletic improvement (ie number of PBs). From time to time KLAC will declare a "no points" day to allow athletes and families to attend other events or go/remain on holidays during parts of school vacation periods without affecting the athletes' points and standing for end of season
